We're a family of two and we love using the FoodCycler so far. We run it a couple of times during the week and haven't had any problems with it at all. It's quieter than we'd imagined. We had planned on running it in our shed, but it made the shed too ******, so now we run it out on our deck and it's been great. We also bought the lid for the bucket and when we have it out on our counter, it doesn't smell at all. It's kind of amazing. One problem we are having is with the processed scraps - we've been dumping them in our garden, but the scraps keep getting very moldy. Is there a better way to use the scraps? Should we be mixing them with soil before we sprinkle in the garden? Any tips would be appreciated!
Hi Heather! Thank you for your review! To store the FoodCycler by-product, we recommend an open-air container in a cool, dry space in your home. This will keep it from molding and continuing the breakdown process (which is best left for your soil and spring garden!). If left dry, the by-product will remain odorless and sterile. However, once the "foodilizer" encounters the microbiome of your soil, it will continue this breakdown process, which can result in bacteria and mold. If you want this process to start before incorporating it in with your garden soil in the spring, you can purchase potting soil and mix the by-product in at a ratio of 1 part "foodilizer" to 10 parts soil - this will jumpstart your soil amendment in advance of warmer weather! Hope this helps! Happy FoodCycling!
My husband purchased this as a Christmas present and I love it! It is quiet and efficient and I love the fact that I feel like I'm helping the environment and not dumping all our scraps down the garbage disposal or the landfill. I highly recommend this product!
I was skeptical after the first round because I put in a lot of fiber from vegetables and fruits that I juiced and it turned into a cake at the bottom of the container. But I have processed two more cycles including banana peels and avocado peels and it has turned out great. My dog loves the smell and wants to eat it so I will have to keep it out of his reach. My question is can you add any paper products to the FoodCycler?
Hi Nicole, The FoodCycler is intended first and foremost for organic material, you will not damage the machine by processing a small amount of biodegradable material, such as paper napkins. At the most, you might end up with bits of heavily processed paper. However this material is still completely biodegradable if properly mixed in with your soil without processing it through the FoodCycler. If you would still rather cycle it in we recommend cutting up the napkins into smaller bits before processing to avoid creating a crust in the bucket. With that being said, since the FoodCycler uses heat and aeration to process the waste please ensure NO "compo-stable/biodegradable" plastics are added in. I hope this helps! Kind regards, Jillian
We LOVE the food cycler. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't hold enough. A family of 4 that eats a lot of veggies can fill the bucket more than once daily.
I think the foodcycler is amazing! I am so surprised at how well it works - it allows me to compost in my kitchen without foul odors or nasty critters crawling on my counters. I only wish you had a bigger one.
